Ganesh Puja, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, is a vibrant and deeply cherished festival in India, celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the rituals commence with the installation of the Ganesha idol in the home or community pandal (temporary pavilion). The idol is ceremoniously invoked with prayers and offerings. The Puja involves a series of rituals, including the recitation of Vedic hymns, performing aarti (a ritual involving light), and offering a variety of sweets and delicacies to Lord Ganesha.
One of the most significant aspects of Ganesh Puja is the ritualistic preparation of modaks—sweet dumplings that are believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite delicacy. These sweets are offered to the deity during the Puja and are later distributed among family and friends.
In addition to private ceremonies, Ganesh Puja is celebrated with immense grandeur in public spaces. Communities organize elaborate Ganesh Chaturthi processions, featuring decorated floats and enthusiastic crowds. The immersion is accompanied by chants of “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya” (O Lord Ganesh, we bid you farewell, come again next year).
